Mount Rinjani inLombok, being the
second highest volcano in Indonesia after Mount Kerinci in Sumatra, is one of
the most popular trekking in Indonesia. This is because it offers amazing adventurous
hike that promises breathtaking view at the peak. It is also partly because of
its good location in Lombok which is many independent travelers’ favourite.
Standing at 3,726 m, Mount Rinjani is
one of the most active volcano in Indonesia, similarly toMount Bromoin
Java. It bears a caldera of 50 km square that holds a crater lake called Segara
Anak (Child of Sea), which has a natural hot spring.
Mount Rinjani
had been proposed by the government to UNESCO to be one of the world’s first
official geoparks if approved. To be awe in
nature’s best combination of beauty and danger, an active volcano that can be
so foreboding and desolate yet so beautiful. The demanding trek that requires
two days to conquer the mountain will make it all worthwhile when greeted by
the view at the summit. Weather at Mount Rinjani is like the rest
of Indonesia, divided into two seasons of dry and wet season and the
temperatures are quite even.
Part of the famous ‘ring of fire’ this mountain also holds spiritual
significance for the local people. It’s thought that the name Rinjani comes
from an old Javanese term for ‘God’.
Around the
slopes of Rinjani there are lush forests sprinkled with waterfalls and
surrounded by stunning scenery.
Within the
mountain is a crescent shaped lake, the breathtaking Segara Anak which is about
6km across at its widest point. This lake of sulfur is located 600 meters below
the crater rim. Rising from the waters of this lake is a new volcano, Mt. Baru,
which is a result of a series of eruptions during the 1990’s. Segara Anak is a
spiritual place. The Balinese come here each year and perform a ceremony called
pekelan where jewelry is placed in the lake as an offering to the mountain
spirit. The Wetu Telu people also regard the lake as holy and come here to pray
on full moon nights.
Mt Rinjani
lies within the Gunung Rinjani National Park. The park covers 41,330 hectares
and sits inside a major bio-geographical transition zone (Wallacea). This is
where the tropical flora and fauna of South East Asia meets that of
Australasia. This National Park was established in 1997 and is one of over 40
throughout Indonesia.
For visitors,
the three-day Rinjani trek route from Senaru to the crater rim, down to the
Crater Lake then on to Sembalun Lawang, is considered one of the best treks in
South East Asia. More adventurous trekkers may want to head all the way to the
summit of the volcano. This is best reached from Sembalun Lawang and takes four
days, finishing up in Senaru.
To ensure that
local communities benefit from tourism revenue, the Rinjani Trek is managed by
a partnership of National Park officials, the public and private sectors of the
Lombok tourism industry and community representatives. Community run
cooperatives coordinate the Trek at the Rinjani Trek Center (RTC) in Senaru and
the Rinjani Information Center (RIC) in Sembalun Lawang.
Revenue from
tourism activities and entry fees is used for conservation, management and
assisting the National Park with maintenance of the Rinjani Trek, thus ensuring
its sustainability. This management model is unique in Indonesia and considered
an example of best practice of ecotourism in Indonesia.
So When The Best Time To
Come ???
Best time to goisMay – Novemberduring the dry season where there is
less rain but more tourists. This is also the safest time to do trekking. Time to avoid goingis January – March when the park is
normally closed due to heavy rain. At other times, it is possible to trek Mt
Rinjani mostly due to the tropical climate but please do not attempt to climb
Mount Rinjani during lots of rain time because the path may be treacherous.
Always check out for local weather before attempting the trek. Also try to
avoid weekends if you do not want the crowd.
Another that, some
interesting destination arount rinjani are :
·Segara Anak Lake, the vast crater lake with a new cone
forming in it, called Gunung Baru
·Mulang Pakelem– the annual Hindu ceremony at the crater lake, dated
back to 18th century when the Balinese invaded Lombok. You will get to see
hundreds of white clad Hindu pilgrims sitting and praying at the lake.
·DuringRice-Planting Season, the people here would have ceremonies on Mt Rinjani and
Segara Anak lake where they would release small artificial fish made of very
thin gold into the lake.
Komodo Island, IndonesiaThe world's largest lizards live on Komodo Island,
Indonesia. These giant reptiles often exceed 9 feet in length and
can weigh more than 300 pounds. This amazing dragon is a
carnivore and lives mostly on the deer and wild pigs that inhabit the island.
They are good swimmers, and quite agile and swift on dry land.
You can't view these
creatures unless on a guided tour, accompanied by rangers. The Komodo Dragon
can smell blood from many miles away, so visitors are not allowed to bring
any food onto the island. And believe it or not, women during their menstrual
cycle are discouraged to take the tour.
Komodo National Park is located in the
center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and
Flores. Established in 1980, initially the main purpose of the Park was to
conserve the unique Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) and its habitat.
However, over the years, the goals for the Park have expanded to protecting
its entire biodiversity, both terrestrial and marine. In 1986, the Park was
declared a World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve by
UNESCO, both indications of the Park's biological importance.
The deer population
consequently increased and is now providing the komodos a more
self-sufficient and natural hunting ground than in recent history. Still,
having become used to being fed, the komodos occasionally prefer to seek out
easier prey in the vicinity of human settlements by entering villages and
hiding under stilt-houses while awaiting the opportunity to snap passing goat
or chicken. At the same time, the animals have become more aggressive towards
humans, sometimes resulting in deadly attacks. Nevertheless, the Komodo
Dragon remains a symbolic attraction of the island, drawing a large number of
visiting tourists, which provides employment and supports the local economy.
Komodo Island is
not just known for its heritage of convicts and fearsome lizards but also for
its rich marine life and excellent dive sites.
Komodo National Park includes three major
islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands
creating a total surface area (marine and land) of 1817km (proposed
extensions would bring the total surface area up to 2,321km2). As well as being
home to the Komodo dragon, the Park provides refuge for many other
notable terrestrial species such as the orange-footed scrub fowl, an endemic
rat, and the Timor deer. Moreover, the Park includes one of the richest
marine environments including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds,
seamounts, and semi-enclosed bays. These habitats harbor more than 1,000
species of fish, some 260 species of reef-building coral, and 70 species of
sponges. Dugong, sharks, manta rays, at least 14 species of whales, dolphins,
and sea turtles also make Komodo National Park their home.
Threats to terrestrial biodiversity include
the increasing pressure on forest cover and water resources as the local
human population has increased 800% over the past 60 years. In addition, the
Timor deer population, the preferred prey source for the endangered Komodo
dragon, is still being poached. Destructive fishing practices such as
dynamite-, cyanide, and compressor fishing severely threaten the Park's
marine resources by destroying both the habitat (coral reefs) and the
resource itself (fish and invertebrate stocks). The present situation in the
Park is characterized by reduced but continuing destructive fishing practices
primarily by immigrant fishers, and high pressure on demersal stocks like
lobsters, shellfish, groupers and napoleon wrasse. Pollution inputs, ranging
from raw sewage to chemicals, are increasing and may pose a major threat in
the future.

The best adventure
in savvana, you can enjoy in Situbondo. No need to go to Africa, Indonesia has
the best one.It is called as Baluran national park.
Baluran
National Parkis located inSitubondo Regency,East Java,Indonesia. It has a
relatively dry climate and mainly consists of savanna (40%), as well as lowland
forests, mangrove forests and hills, withMount Baluran(1,247m) as its highest peak.
In stark contrast to
the lush green scenery found elsewhere on the island of Java, theBaluran National Park, located on the east-most edge of Java, consists
predominantly of open savannahs, where wildlife roam free. Here one can watch
grazing, the large Javan water buffaloes called “banteng”, small Java mouse
deer known as “kancil”, peacocks strutting about displaying their colorful
plumage, eagles flying overhead and macaques fishing for crabs with their tails.
Baluran National Park is situated at
the north-eastern extremity ofJava, close to the islands ofBaliandMadura. The park is
bordered by theMadura Straitto the north, theBali Straitto the east, the river Bajulmati
(Wonorejo village) to the west and the river Klokoran (Sumberanyar village) to
the south.
This park is a forest preservation area
that covers about 25,000 hectares of the north coast ofEast Java. The park offers some great scenery and has
organised safari activities. Safari is a much misused term in Asian travel
circles but in this case it is appropriate - there is something very African
about the savannah grasslands of Baluran. Of the three large national parks in
East Java, this is the easiest reached and by far the easiest to travel around.
During the dry season, the land parches and water becomes scarce, while
when it rains, water slides over the black alluvial land with little being absorbed,
forming water pools especially along the Park’s southern part that connects Talpat with Bama Beach.
when you visit Baluran during the rainy season, you will see ample water
holes, but during this time the Banteng and the wild bulls prefer to wander in
the forests, although other animals like peacocks, mouse deer, and wild fowl do
come out and can still be observed.
Baluran National Park boasts 444 species of trees, some
unique to the area like the widoro bukol (Ziziphus
rotundifolia), mimba (Azadirachta
indica), and pilang (Acacia
leucophloea). These plants are able to adapt to dry
conditions when others have long wilted. Other trees also remaining green are
the candle trees or kemiri (Aleurites
moluccana), gebang(Corypha utan), api-api (Avicennia sp), the
tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica), gadung(Dioscorea hispida), kendal (Cordia obliqua), manting (Syzygium polyanthum), and
kepuh (Sterculia foetida).
Additionally, Baluran is habitat to 155 types of birds, among
which are the rare fire kite (Hirundo rustica), the red forest fowl (Gallus
gallus), kangkareng (Anthracoceros convecus),
hornbills (Buceros rhinoceros), tuwuk or asian tuwur (Eudynamys
scolopacea), peacocks (Pavo muticus), and herons (Leptoptilos
javanicus).
There
are several activities that you can do in this park such as: - Safari Forest -
forest adventure - Diving and snorkeling - Mountain hiking and mount climbing -
Hill walking - Beach adventure to watch the fishermen's daily activities and
seed seekers - Canoeing, rowing or boating until you the Fresh Water Gulf,
Sejile Gulf and Bilik Beach.
A safari trip to Baluran is indeed a precious journey.

The wind at G-Land
blows offshore between the months of April and September, which also happens to
be when the swells are at their largest and most consistent. Since the swells
are generated by low pressure systems circling Antarctica, their regularity coincides
with the passage of these lows. So, the swell arrive in pulses, each lasting
for a couple of days, with a couple of days between each swell.
Waves
tend to be bigger and better at hightide,
so it's best to plan a surf trip for the week following afull or new moon, since this is when thetideis
high during the middle of the day.
Come to G-land and
get the Beautiful Experiences...
